The Peak District isn’t just about rolling hills and scenic views – it’s also home to a whole world beneath the surface. If you’ve ever wondered where to go caving in the Peak District, you’re in the right place.

Whether you’re an absolute beginner or someone looking to push their underground skills, caving is one of the most exciting and unique outdoor adventure activities the region has to offer.

At Dolomite Training, we offer fully guided, safe, and educational caving experiences in the Peak District, designed for families, individuals, and adventurous groups. From half-day introductions to more technical explorations, there’s a caving journey waiting for everyone.

Explore Limestone Caves and Historic Mine Systems

A caver looking down a pitch in Rowten Pot

The Peak District’s caves are mostly formed in limestone, perfect for those curious about geology, local history, or simply looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure. The area is full of natural cave systems and decommissioned mine systems that break into beautifully sculpted underground networks.

Our most popular caving locations include:

  • Castleton – The UK’s caving capital, packed with natural caves and caverns
  • Bradwell Caverns – Home to fascinating mine systems with natural extensions
  • Stoney Midleton – Mostly caves with a few mines AND host to a huge fossilised oyster bed.
  • South Peak District Mines – A mix of history and adventure beneath the hills

Each trip is chosen based on the group’s ability and confidence level. Rainy day? No problem! Caves are one of the best all-weather outdoor activities in the Peak District.

What to Expect Underground

When you book a caving experience in the Peak District with Dolomite Training, you’re signing up for more than just a walk in the dark. Our routes are chosen to match the abilities of each group and can include:

  • Easy horizontal passages (yes, even with a backpack on!)
  • Natural cave features like stalactites and flowstone
  • Exciting climbs and scrambles (with a helping hand from your guide!)
  • Exploration of centuries-old mine shafts and tunnels

We offer caving for beginners in the Peak District, along with more technical trips for those looking to build their skills or gain experience in vertical rope work. All sessions are led by highly qualified instructors with extensive knowledge of the terrain and safety protocols.

Safety First: Qualified Instructors & Full Accreditation

We take your safety seriously, but without taking the fun out of it!

All of our caving instructors are:

  • Fully qualified in both horizontal and vertical caving techniques
  • Fully insured and AALA (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) accredited – allowing us to work with unaccompanied under 18s

So, whether you’re bringing your kids for a first underground adventure or joining us for a more advanced challenge, you’re in expert hands from start to finish.

What’s Included in Your Caving Experience

All our caving adventures include top-quality kit, so you don’t need to bring much, just your sense of adventure!

We provide:

  • Caving suits
  • Helmets with lights
  • Harnesses where needed
  • Gloves and rubber-soled wellies
  • Backpacks (if required)
  • Pro tips on what kind of snacks/lunches work best underground, for example sealed containers and finger foods are ideal so you don’t need to remove your gloves! (no one likes a soggy sandwich!)

We operate with the necessary permissions to access private land and hold £10M Public Liability Insurance. It’s all part of delivering unique outdoor experiences in the Peak District that are as smooth and stress-free.

Who Is It For? Everyone!

Our family caving experiences in the Peak District are designed with inclusivity in mind. Whether you’re aged 8 or 80, we’ve got a route for you.

We work with:

  • Families looking for memorable days out
  • School outdoor activity trips in the Peak District
  • Corporate team-building groups
  • Friends looking to try something new
  • Stag and hen adventure weekends
  • Charity groups and youth organisations

If you’re keen to step things up, we can also combine caving with other activities like climbing, abseiling, or navigation courses in the Peak District for a full weekend of adrenaline and skill-building.

What Not to Do!

The biggest thing to remember is, never go caving without a qualified and accredited professional! Not only are these stunning caves located on (mostly) private land, but they can also be very dangerous for the inexperienced, no matter how adventurous you are or even if you’ve been before!

Our team have spent years training and hold the all the necessary qualifications, accreditations, insurances and permissions.. so trust us, we know what we’re doing!
